The triumph acclaim looks very similar to a 70s/80s honda from the front.

Because it pretty much was, based off the Honda Ballade, which was in essence a Civic sedan.

Because it was manufactured by people who were too busy going on strike to actually put effort in to making a well built car.

I have the strong suspicion that the rover sterling is actually a pretty strong car. Judging by contemporary road tests, reviews of people who drive them and having driven a rover of a similar era they seem like solid cars that just missed the zeitgeist of the era so didn’t catch on sales-wise.
100% would buy for 800 and drive for 6 months (my litmus test for whether i respect a car or not...)

I think it was mainly that it was compared way to often to the Jaguar XJ, when in reality it’s competition should have been cars like the 3-series, 190E, etc.

Yeah its real place in the market was between the low-scale luxury of a big ford or vauxhall and the old-school luxury of a jag or mercedes. Good niche to be in, people too proud for a commoners ford, but not quite old-money enough to tempt the bankers of the world.
Not quite so successful garnering that niche in the states, and too far from the ‘british bruiser’ niche the sd1 had carved to capitolise on its predecessor’s positive traits...
